Short Double coats look low-maintenance, but the dense undercoat hides close to the skin — what you brush off the surface is only half of what’s there. Every tool, shampoo, and conditioner in this kit was chosen specifically for Short Double coat — not generic, but built to reach the packed undercoat and keep shedding under control. Your Protocol gives you the method to manage both layers properly, so the coat stays healthy from the skin out.

Short Double coats follow the full FurHQ 5-Step Grooming Method (Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish). It opens with the Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check. Prep then starts with a quick brush-through with the Medium-Pinned Slicker to lift loose hair, followed by the Coat Release Method (our technique for lifting loose undercoat from the skin) in the wash, with conditioning as the final rinse. During Dry, the coat is dried all the way to bone-dry, with the brush coming in for the final stage of the dry — damp coat is vulnerable, and brushing too soon pulls and breaks the fibre. Never stop at damp — a damp coat is uncomfortable for the dog and invites hot spots and brush burn. Carding the body coat (raking out dead, loose undercoat) is done on a dry coat in Prep, no more than once a week.

Learn the Method. Follow the Protocol. Complete the Mission.

Your kit includes access to your Short Double Coat Protocol on FurHQ — video lessons featuring demo dog Dougie Doublecoat walking you through every step. You’ll learn how to use the Short-Medium Coat Carding Rake correctly (on the body coat, no more than once a week), the Coat Release Method , and how to get a thorough, professional dry at home. Your Protocol also includes supporting resources — guides, cheat sheets, checklists, and more — to keep you on track between grooms.

Short Double coats are short and dense with a year-round undercoat that sheds steadily. Some examples of breeds this kit is perfect for include the Labrador Retriever, Beagle, Rottweiler, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Belgian Malinois, and Pug — breeds that look low-maintenance but still need consistent undercoat management.

Breed is a starting point, not a rule. Coat type comes down to the individual dog — the same breed can carry a different coat, so always groom the coat in front of you. If your dog’s coat doesn’t match what’s described here, use the FurHQ Coat Identifier to find the right fit.

No more guesswork. No more mixing and matching tools and products - everything here was chosen for your dog's specific coat type, professional-grade and built to last.

Add your kit and get started.
