It's a Short Coat. How Bad Can the Shedding Be?

Short double coats are the most underestimated coat type in grooming. The coat looks low-maintenance, but the undercoat produces a relentless volume of loose hair that most owners are completely unprepared for.

Shedding That Never Stops

Short double coats shed year-round, with seasonal blows that make it worse. The short hairs embed in furniture, clothes, and car seats - and they are harder to remove than long hair because they weave into fabric.

Hidden Undercoat Problems

Because the outer coat is short, owners assume the undercoat is too. It is not. Dead undercoat packs against the skin, traps heat and moisture, and creates conditions for hotspots and irritation you cannot see from the surface.

My Lab Doesn't Need Grooming

The most common misconception in dog ownership. Labs, Corgis, and short double-coated breeds need consistent undercoat management just as much as any long-coated breed. The difference is the consequences are invisible until they are serious.

Your Short Double Coat Session, Step by Step

Short double coats look simple but produce a surprising amount of loose undercoat. Every step is built around managing it properly.

1

Audit

Hands-on health check. Skin, ears, teeth, nails, coat condition. Run your hands against the grain - if the undercoat feels dense and packed rather than loose and airy, this session needs to focus on releasing it.

2

Prep

Optional quick brush pass to loosen surface debris before the wash. Short double coats do not require a full line brush, but a quick once-over helps the wash products penetrate better.

3

Wash

Cleanse, release trapped undercoat, and condition throughout. This is where the Coat Release Method happens - loosening packed dead undercoat so it can be removed during drying. Work product all the way to the skin. Short does not mean shallow - the undercoat is dense.

4

Dry

Thorough dry to the skin - no shortcuts. Significant undercoat releases during drying, and this is where you will see the volume of dead coat that was trapped underneath. Brush through as you dry to keep it moving out.

5

Finish

Brush through the entire coat. Deshed to remove any remaining dead undercoat that released during drying. Comb check to verify the undercoat is clear and nothing was missed. Clean the ears. If the comb glides through from skin to tip without catching, the session achieved its purpose.

Coat Education

What Makes Short Double Coats Different

Short double coats have a dense, soft undercoat beneath a short, weather-resistant outer coat. The outer coat lies flat against the body and repels water, while the undercoat provides insulation. From the surface, it looks like a simple, low-maintenance coat. Underneath, it is anything but.

Superpower: Weather-Resistant Structure

The outer coat and undercoat work together to protect against rain, cold, and UV. A properly maintained short double coat is one of nature's best all-weather systems.

Kryptonite: Relentless Shedding

Short double coats shed more than most owners expect. The short hairs embed in fabric and are harder to remove than long hair. Regular brushing and the Coat Release Method are the most effective way to stay ahead of it.

Seasonal Blowing

Twice a year, the undercoat blows - a massive shed that can last 2-4 weeks. During a blow, daily brushing and more frequent washes with the Coat Release Method are needed to keep up.

The Coat Release Method

A wash technique that loosens packed dead undercoat for easier removal during drying. This is the most effective way to manage the volume of dead coat this type produces.

Healthy Coat Standard

What Does a Healthy Short Double Coat Look Like?

Not just short and clean. A coat with a loose, healthy undercoat, no packed dead hair, and skin that can breathe.

Outer coat lies flat with natural sheen
Undercoat is loose and airy, not packed
No hotspots or skin irritation
Clean ears
Minimal loose hair on furniture between sessions
No dog smell from trapped undercoat
Comb glides skin to tip without catching

Short coat, serious system. That's the standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog has a short coat. Does it really need all this?+

Yes. Short double coats are the most underestimated coat type in grooming. The outer coat is short, but the undercoat is dense and sheds constantly. Without proper management, dead undercoat packs against the skin and creates problems you cannot see from the surface.

How do I handle a seasonal coat blow?+

During a blow, increase brushing to daily and consider an extra wash with the Coat Release Method to speed up the process. A blow typically lasts 2-4 weeks.

What is the difference between Short Double and Smooth?+

Smooth coats have no undercoat - just a single layer of short hair close to the skin. Short double coats have a dense undercoat beneath the outer coat. Smooth coats focus on skin health. Short double coats focus on undercoat management.

Will this reduce shedding around the house?+

Significantly. Regular brushing and the Coat Release Method remove dead undercoat before it ends up on your furniture, clothes, and car seats. You will not eliminate shedding entirely, but a consistent system makes it manageable.

What if my dog hates being groomed?+

Very common. The kit includes the Zen Wrap for calming, the Stay Put System for safety, and your video course covers desensitisation techniques. Short double coat sessions do not need to be long - consistent short sessions build tolerance and positive associations over time.

What's included in the video course?+

Five Missions (one per step of the 5-Step Method) filmed with a short double coat. Special focus on the Coat Release Method, proper drying technique, undercoat management, and seasonal blow strategies. You also get printable checklists, cheat sheets, and guides for every mission and checkpoint.

I have a puppy and I know what coat type they will be as an adult. Can I start with the kit?+

Yes - and the earlier you start, the better. You will not need all the tools initially (for example, the carding rake will not be relevant until the adult double coat comes in), but you can absolutely begin training them with the Stay Put System, and all the products are puppy-coat approved. Puppy time is the perfect time to desensitise and let them be curious about the tools and sensations of a brush, comb, dryer, and everything else. We will show you how to initiate your puppy to become a FurHQ ambassador themselves.

I already have grooming tools at home. Will they work?+

You may or may not have the right tools for your coat type - but our experience is that most pet owners do not. And even if you do have the right tool, without the knowhow to use it properly, it can cause your dog to hate grooming and leave you not achieving your goals. Every item in this kit is professional-grade and matched specifically to your short double coat, and the video course teaches you how to use each one so your sessions are productive and your dog stays comfortable.
