View grooming kitsThe FurHQ Method is five steps — Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish — the grooming protocol your course teaches.
The complete FurHQ Method for short double coats — the dense, hard-working coats with a short outer layer over a thick undercoat that sheds, and sheds, and sheds. The length is short but the volume is real, and the secret is managing that undercoat: clear it properly and shedding becomes manageable; ignore it and it packs down against the skin. This Protocol teaches you the deshedding-first routine built for this coat, with your demo dog Dougie Doublecoat showing you every step.
What You'll Learn
- Master the undercoat — keep the thick underlayer clear so the coat stays healthy and sheds far less around your home
- Card on schedule — use the carding rake on a dry coat, up to once a week, to stay ahead of the shed
- Lift loose coat at the skin — the Coat Release Method for freeing dead undercoat during the wash
- Wash and rinse a dense coat — how to get shampoo down to the skin and fully back out again
- Finish clean and flat — leave the coat smooth, healthy, and lying right
The FurHQ Method for This Coat
- Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check, reading how heavy the undercoat is sitting
- Prep — card on a dry coat (up to once a week) and brush through with the Medium-Pinned Slicker to lift loose hair before the wash
- Wash — clean with your coat-appropriate shampoo, repeating for adult dogs, and use the Coat Release Method with the Firm Rubber Curry to work loose undercoat free at the skin
- Dry — dry the coat down, using the Undercoat Depth Comb and slicker to clear the last of the loose hair as it finishes
- Finish — a final pass with the Undercoat Depth Comb confirms the coat is clear, then set a clean, flat finish
Who It's For
Short double coats have a short outer coat over a dense, shedding undercoat. Some examples are the Labrador Retriever, Beagle, Rottweiler, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Belgian Malinois, and Pug. Breed is a starting point, not a rule — groom the coat in front of you, and use the FurHQ Coat Identifier if you're not sure.
How the Protocol Works
Your Protocol lives on FurHQ as five video Missions you can follow at your own pace, on any device — each Mission is a single video covering that stage of the groom. Demo dog Dougie Doublecoat walks you through every step, so you're never guessing what comes next. Watch them through once, then keep them open beside you on groom day.
Learn the Method. Follow the Protocol. Complete the Mission.
