FurHQ Starter Grooming Kit – Wire Coat

Wire coats are one of the most misunderstood coat types at home — and the most common mistake is treating the jacket the same as the furnishings . Every tool, shampoo, and conditioner in this kit is calibrated for the dual nature of a wire coat — not generic, but built around the distinction between jacket and furnishings that makes Wire coat grooming unique. Every step in your Protocol is built around that same distinction, so you always know exactly what you’re doing and why.
Wire coats follow the full FurHQ 5-Step Grooming Method (Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish). It opens with the Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check. Carding (raking out dead, loose undercoat ) happens in Prep only — on a dry coat, before the wash — and only the furnishings and undercoat receive conditioner and spray during the wash; the jacket and saddle are never conditioned. During Dry, the coat is dried all the way to bone-dry, with the brush coming in for the final stretch on the furnishings only — introducing the brush too early on damp furnishings stretches and weakens the texture. Never stop at damp — a damp coat is uncomfortable for the dog and invites hot spots and brush burn. Finish is a final comb-through on the furnishings only.
Learn the Method. Follow the Protocol. Complete the Mission.
You got this.
Your kit includes access to your Wire Coat Protocol on FurHQ — video lessons featuring demo dog Betsy Bristle walking you through every step. You’ll learn the difference between the jacket and the furnishings , how and when to card (Prep only — never in Finish), the Coat Release Method (our technique for lifting loose undercoat from the skin), and how to handle conditioning correctly so you never compromise the jacket’s natural texture. Your Protocol also includes supporting resources — guides, cheat sheets, checklists, and more — to keep you on track between grooms.
Wire coats are coarse, dense, and have a distinctive jacket and furnishings structure that makes them unlike any other coat type to groom. Some examples of breeds this kit is perfect for include the Miniature Schnauzer, West Highland White Terrier, Giant Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier, Cairn Terrier, and Airedale Terrier — breeds whose coats require a very specific approach to maintain their texture and character.
Breed is a starting point, not a rule. Coat type comes down to the individual dog — the same breed can carry a different coat, so always groom the coat in front of you. If your dog’s coat doesn’t match what’s described here, use the FurHQ Coat Identifier to find the right fit.
No more guesswork. No more mixing and matching tools and products - everything here was chosen for your dog's specific coat type, professional-grade and built to last.
