FurHQ Starter Grooming Kit – Drop Coat

Drop coats are delicate and unforgiving — the wrong tool or the wrong technique causes breakage, split ends, and matting that’s difficult to reverse. Every tool, shampoo, and conditioner in this kit was chosen to work with the coat’s natural texture instead of against it — not generic, but selected for the fragility and continuous growth of a Drop coat. Your Protocol teaches you the sequence and technique that keeps long coat healthy from root to tip, so there’s no more guessing what to do next.
Drop coats follow the full FurHQ 5-Step Grooming Method (Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish). It opens with the Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check. Prep then includes a light mist and a careful line-brush (parting the coat and brushing it section by section) before the wash. The Wash step ends with conditioning as the final rinse. During Dry, the coat is dried all the way to bone-dry, with the brush coming in for the final stage of the dry — damp hair stretches instead of releasing, causing breakage and split ends in long coat. Never stop at damp — a damp coat is uncomfortable for the dog and invites hot spots and brush burn. Pawfect Finish Coat Spray is used before every brush session.

Your kit includes access to your Drop Coat Protocol on FurHQ — video lessons featuring demo dog Leo Longlocks walking you through every step. You’ll learn how to handle fragile, long coat without causing breakage, how to use the Pin Brush correctly, and how to build a brushing routine that keeps your dog’s coat growing healthy and long. Your Protocol also includes supporting resources — guides, cheat sheets, checklists, and more — to keep you on track between grooms.
Drop coats are long, silky, and grow continuously — they’re stunning when cared for properly and a tangled mess when they’re not. Some examples of breeds this kit is perfect for include the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Maltese, and Coton de Tulear — breeds whose flowing coats require consistent moisture, careful brushing, and a gentle touch.
Breed is a starting point, not a rule. Coat type comes down to the individual dog — the same breed can carry a different coat, so always groom the coat in front of you. If your dog’s coat doesn’t match what’s described here, use the FurHQ Coat Identifier to find the right fit.
Note: If your dog is kept in a short trim, their coat type moves into Curly Wavy territory — that’s the kit for you.
No more guesswork. No more mixing and matching tools and products - everything here was chosen for your dog's specific coat type, professional-grade and built to last.
