View grooming kitsThe FurHQ Method is five steps — Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish — the grooming protocol your course teaches.
The complete FurHQ Method for drop coats — the long, fine, flowing coats that hang straight down and look stunning when they're right and matted in a heartbeat when they're not. A drop coat is delicate and grows continuously, so it punishes guesswork: the wrong tool or the wrong technique means breakage and split ends. This Protocol teaches you the exact sequence that keeps long coat healthy from root to tip, with your demo dog Leo Longlocks showing you every step.
What You'll Learn
- Line-brush the right way — the core technique for a drop coat: parting the coat and brushing it section by section, from the skin out
- Never brush a dry coat — why misting first protects fine hair, and how to build it into every session
- Wash and condition for length — keep long coat fragile-strong, with conditioner given time to do its work
- Dry without damage — how to take the coat to the finish line without frizz or breakage
- Stay ahead between grooms — the light, regular brushing that stops mats before they start
The FurHQ Method for This Coat
- Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check, feeling for the tangles a long coat hides against the skin
- Prep — mist with Pawfect Finish Coat Spray, then line-brush the coat out before the wash — never dry
- Wash — clean with Shimmer & Shine Shampoo, repeating for adult dogs, then let Coat-Quench Conditioner sit two to three minutes before rinsing
- Dry — take the coat to 80% dry, then bring the Long-Pinned Slicker in for the final 20%, brushing it out straight as it finishes
- Finish — a last line-brush and comb-through confirms the coat is tangle-free top to bottom
The golden rule for a drop coat: never brush it dry. Always mist with Pawfect Finish Coat Spray first — dry-brushing fine coat causes static and breakage.
Who It's For
Drop coats are long, fine, and single-layered, falling straight down on either side of the body. Some examples are the Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Maltese, and Coton de Tulear. Breed is a starting point, not a rule — groom the coat in front of you, and use the FurHQ Coat Identifier if you're not sure. If a drop coat is kept in a short trim, treat it more like a Curly Wavy coat.
How the Protocol Works
Your Protocol lives on FurHQ as five video Missions you can follow at your own pace, on any device — each Mission is a single video covering that stage of the groom. Demo dog Leo Longlocks walks you through every step, so you're never guessing what comes next. Watch them through once, then keep them open beside you on groom day.
Learn the Method. Follow the Protocol. Complete the Mission.
