Forgotten Furnishings
The beard, legs, and eyebrows are soft and mat-prone while the wiry jacket above looks fine. Owners focus on what they see and miss what tangles underneath.
The complete grooming system for Schnauzers, Wire Fox Terriers, and wire-coated breeds. Professional-grade tools, coat-specific products, video tutorials, and the 5-Step Method - built around the unique demands of a dual-texture coat.

A wire coat has a harsh, weather-resistant jacket on top and a soft undercoat with furnishings underneath. They need completely different care - and most advice treats them as one coat.
The beard, legs, and eyebrows are soft and mat-prone while the wiry jacket above looks fine. Owners focus on what they see and miss what tangles underneath.
Conditioner on the wiry jacket softens it, destroying the harsh texture that makes wire coats weather-resistant. But the furnishings desperately need it.
Hand-stripping vs. clipping. Carding frequency. When to strip, when to card, when to leave it alone. The internet gives 47 different answers.
These are the same tools and products professional groomers use on wire coats - with selective application rules built in.

Suction cup anchor and safety lead. Attaches to any smooth surface, keeps your dog comfortably and safely in place during every step.

Calming compression wrap for noise reduction and gentle pressure. Helps anxious or reactive dogs settle during grooming sessions.

Removes dead hair from the wiry jacket without cutting live coat. Maintains texture and promotes healthy regrowth.

For furnishings and undercoat. Reaches through soft, tangle-prone hair on legs, beard, and chest.

Fine-tooth precision for face furnishings, eyebrows, and verifying the coat is tangle-free after brushing.

Conditioning, detangling, finishing. Mist on furnishings before brushing and during drying. Adds slip and protects soft coat areas.

Wider nubs for loosening dead undercoat during the wash. Works shampoo through the coat and stimulates skin.

Formulated for textured coats. Cleans without softening the wiry jacket or stripping natural oils.

Lightweight hydration for furnishings and undercoat only. Keeps the beard, legs, and soft areas tangle-free.

Ear care and cleaning. Wire coat breeds with heavy ear furnishings trap moisture and debris - regular cleaning prevents infection.
Wire coats require selective care - different approaches for the jacket vs. the furnishings. Here is exactly how each step works for your coat type.
Hands-on health check. Skin, ears, teeth, nails, coat condition. Note jacket texture and furnishing condition. Is the jacket feeling soft? That is a sign it needs carding. Are the furnishings starting to tangle? This is where you catch it early.
Line brush the longer furnishing areas - legs, chest, belly, and beard. Mist first - never dry brush. Quick sweep with the slicker on the jacket to loosen surface debris. Card the jacket before washing so the wash can do its job on clean, open coat.
Cleanse the full coat, then condition furnishings only. The jacket should never be conditioned - it softens the harsh, weather-resistant texture. Take your time working product through the beard, legs, and chest where tangles hide.
Brush through furnishings as the coat dries - timing matters here, because the soft furnishing hair tangles as it dries if left unattended. The jacket dries naturally and does not need brushing during this step.
Final comb-through on furnishings to verify everything is clean, dry, and tangle-free. Clean the ears. Run your hands over the jacket - it should feel harsh and bristly, not soft.
Wire coats are actually two coats living together. The outer jacket is made of harsh, bristly guard hairs that repel water, dirt, and debris. Underneath sits a soft, dense undercoat, and the furnishings are made of a completely different, softer texture.
The wiry outer coat sheds dirt and repels moisture naturally. A properly maintained wire jacket is one of the most functional coat types in the dog world.
While the jacket takes care of itself, the soft furnishings mat silently. The beard collects food and moisture. Leg hair tangles from movement. Most wire coat problems happen here.
Carding removes dead undercoat and loose jacket hair. Hand-stripping pulls dead jacket hairs to promote proper regrowth. Your kit covers carding - stripping is a separate technique not included in this system.
Wire coats benefit from the Coat Release Method during the wash - a technique that loosens dead undercoat for easier removal.
Your kit includes a full video course filmed with a wire coat, plus printable checklists, cheat sheets, and mission PDFs for every step. Covers selective conditioning, carding technique, and furnishings care.

Not show-ring stripped. Not over-groomed. Just healthy, well-maintained, and with both textures doing their job.
Healthy, well-maintained, and ready for whatever today brings. That's the standard.
Real experiences from FurHQ dog owners.
“FurHQ helped me understand what Steve’s coat needs, what I can do at home, and how to make brushing and grooming just a normal part of his routine.”
“I feel much more confident looking after his coat now, and Jake looks and feels great. FurHQ made it simple and practical, even for someone who isn’t a groomer.”
“The course gave me a much better understanding of how to properly brush, comb, bathe and maintain his coat. As a visual learner, I found the videos especially helpful!”
The wiry jacket gets its texture from harsh guard hairs. Conditioner softens them, destroying the weather-resistant quality that makes wire coats functional. Conditioner is essential for the soft furnishings and undercoat - just keep it off the jacket and saddle area.
Carding uses a rake to remove dead undercoat and loose jacket hair - it's maintenance, and your kit covers it. Hand-stripping pulls dead guard hairs individually to promote proper regrowth and maintain jacket colour. Stripping is a separate technique not included in this kit.
Maximum once per week. Over-carding strips too much coat and irritates the skin. Your furnishings need brushing 2-3 times per week with the Medium-Pinned Slicker Brush, but the jacket only needs the carding rake weekly at most.
Absolutely. Most pet wire coats are clipped, and the kit works for both clipped and hand-stripped coats. Clipped coats may feel softer, but the furnishings still need the same care.
Yes. Every brush, comb, rake, and product in this kit is professional-grade - the same quality groomers reach for daily. The difference is we've selected the specific tools that work best for wire coats, with built-in guidance on where to use each one.
Very common with wire coats - the beard is sensitive. The kit includes the Zen Wrap for calming, the Stay Put System for safety, and your video course covers desensitisation techniques for facial grooming. The FurHQ Pack community is full of wire coat owners who've worked through the same thing.
Five Missions (one per step of the 5-Step Method) filmed with a wire coat. Special focus on selective conditioning technique, proper carding method, furnishings vs. jacket care, and the Coat Release Method. You also get printable checklists, cheat sheets, and guides for every mission and checkpoint.
Yes - and the earlier you start, the better. You will not need all the tools initially (for example, the carding rake will not be relevant until the adult wire coat comes in), but you can absolutely begin training them with the Stay Put System, and all the products are puppy-coat approved. Puppy time is the perfect time to desensitise and let them be curious about the tools and sensations of a brush, comb, dryer, and everything else. We will show you how to initiate your puppy to become a FurHQ ambassador themselves.
You may or may not have the right tools for your coat type - but our experience is that most pet owners do not. And even if you do have the right tool, without the knowhow to use it properly, it can cause your dog to hate grooming and leave you not achieving your goals. Every item in this kit is professional-grade and matched specifically to your wire coat, and the video course teaches you how to use each one so your sessions are productive and your dog stays comfortable.
10 professional-grade items. Full video course. Printable checklists and guides. The FurHQ Pack community. The 5-Step Method with selective conditioning built in. Everything your wire coat needs.
