View grooming kitsThe FurHQ Method is five steps — Audit, Prep, Wash, Dry, Finish — the grooming protocol your course teaches.
The complete FurHQ Method for medium plush double coats — the thick, soft, stand-off coats that make a dog look magnificent and leave your home covered in fur. A medium plush coat carries a huge, dense undercoat under a plush outer layer, and the whole job is getting through that density to the skin, clearing the loose undercoat, and drying it right. This Protocol teaches you the routine that tames the plush, with your demo dog Lady Shediva showing you every step.
What You'll Learn
- Brush through to the skin — get past the plush outer coat to the undercoat where the real work is
- Clear the shedding undercoat — keep that dense underlayer moving so it doesn't pack down or blow out all at once
- Card on schedule — use the carding rake on a dry coat, up to once every two weeks, for a plush coat
- Lift loose coat at the skin — the Coat Release Method for freeing dead undercoat during the wash
- Dry a dense coat fully — why drying to the skin matters most on a plush double coat, and how the slicker finishes it
The FurHQ Method for This Coat
- Audit — a quick head-to-paw health check, feeling through the plush for undercoat sitting close to the skin
- Prep — card on a dry coat (up to once every two weeks) and brush through to the skin with the Medium-Pinned Slicker before the wash
- Wash — clean with your coat-appropriate shampoo, repeating for adult dogs, and use the Coat Release Method with the Firm Rubber Curry to lift loose undercoat at the skin
- Dry — dry all the way to the skin; once the coat is 80% dry, bring the Medium-Pinned Slicker in for the final 20%, brushing it out as it finishes
- Finish — a final brush-through and comb confirm the coat is clear and dry right down to the skin
Who It's For
Medium plush double coats have a plush, medium-length outer coat over a very dense, heavily shedding undercoat. Some examples are the German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Pomeranian, Siberian Husky, Shiba Inu, and Samoyed. Breed is a starting point, not a rule — groom the coat in front of you, and use the FurHQ Coat Identifier if you're not sure. The Deshedding Comb isn't in this Protocol's kit, but it's a great add-on for a heavy shedder.
How the Protocol Works
Your Protocol lives on FurHQ as five video Missions you can follow at your own pace, on any device — each Mission is a single video covering that stage of the groom. Demo dog Lady Shediva walks you through every step, so you're never guessing what comes next. Watch them through once, then keep them open beside you on groom day.
Learn the Method. Follow the Protocol. Complete the Mission.
